TC Energy & ERM Use Virtual Engagement to Overcome Barriers

ERM's award-winning virtual engagement platform enables safe and secure delivery of project information and helps build stakeholder trust during COVID-19 restrictions on public events or gatherings.

ERM is working with several clients to adapt stakeholder engagement within the constraints of COVID-related restrictions. TC Energy is one recent example highlighting the value of this digital solution.

During the pandemic, TC Energy needed to find a safe, effective and reliable way to keep communities and stakeholders informed about the 2021 NGTL System Expansion Project. The 334-kilometer project is being constructed to increase transportation service to an existing natural gas pipeline system. TC Energy worked with ERM to develop a virtual open house that would provide meaningful engagement with communities and stakeholders, without compromising quality, accessibility or safety.

“Beyond the pandemic, we anticipate this innovative tool will continue to enhance community engagement while reducing risks and costs,” says Kelly Matthews, Manager, Canada Gas Communications, TC Energy.

The team worked together to configure ERM’s pre-existing Virtual Meeting Room product to provide a unique, intuitive open house experience for stakeholders via tcenergyopenhouse.com/2021ngtl. Working collaboratively with TC Energy from planning through launch phases, ERM lead creative development of the site and supported content and design, interactive map development, website programming and testing.Even with gathering restrictions during a pandemic, TC Energy can safely and securely connect with and deliver timely project information to communities and stakeholders using the virtual open house. Visitors gain valuable information on topics such as how TC Energy is working with stakeholders, landowners and Indigenous communities working to protect the environment, and implementing strong safety measures. A customized feedback form captures questions and comments, allowing TC Energy to address community needs as the project progresses.ERM has worked in collaboration with TC Energy to configure the Virtual Meeting Room platform for use in open house applications in Canada and the United States:

“We anticipate that the ERM Virtual Meeting Room platform will supplement engagement activities long into the future and offer opportunities to challenge the norm in a variety of use applications,” says Liz Valsamidis, Principal Consultant, ERM.
